While trying to come up with an analogy to explain why the lack of widespread testing gives people a false sense of security, cockroaches popped into mind. Then I realized there are many similarities between both problems. Here are ten ways that COVID-19 cases are like cockroaches. 1) Nobody wants them, especially not in their house or neighborhood! 2) If you don’t already have a problem with them where you live, do everything you can to keep it that way. Prevention is key. 3) Beware of travel. Don’t bring them home with you when you visit others. Limit visitors. They might leave them behind when they go. 4) They prefer conditions where lots of people live close together in environments that are unclean and rarely disinfected. 5) If you find one or two where you live, don’t assume it’s not a big deal yet. You already have a huge problem. There are likely to be many, many more lurking unnoticed. 6) When they find a new environment with their ideal conditions, they will multiply and spread quickly among places and people. 7) Once they have spread out of control where you live, the only way to get it under control is to take drastic, intense, and costly actions. 8) You and your neighbors all need to take the same measures together, or you will never get it under control in your building. 9) Effective chemicals that kill or deter them can help reduce the rate of spread and numbers, but they are not sufficient to completely get rid of the problem. 10) Even if you remedy the problem temporarily where you live, eradication is impossible. Ongoing vigilant prevention and control measures are needed to keep them under control. Are there any other similarities? Can you think of other problems that make an interesting analogy to COVID-19 cases? I hope that you can avoid both problems where you live! COVID Carrie
